Holy crap, when is this going to end!? Toyota just announced a voluntary recall of another of their vehicles, this time the 2010 Tacoma 4WD trucks. According to Toyota, the from drive shaft in about 8,000 Tacomas may contain “cracks that developed during the manufacturing process,” and “may eventually lead to the separation of the drive shaft at the joint portion.” Ouch.

This, of course, after the recall of the Prius’ faulty brakes and the sticky accelerator pedals affecting millions. Who else is starting to suspect sabotage? Either that, or the reports are true that Toyota purposely covered up the issues. Either way, Toyota is getting in deeper and deeper.

The problem with the drive shafts isn’t nearly as big, luckily, and that the problem “only involves two specific front drive shaft production lot numbers installed in certain 2010 model year Tacoma 4WD vehicles.” Still, how does look to potential Toyota buyers? Would I buy one? Not “no,” but “HELL no.”

Just as things seemed like they couldn’t get any worse for Toyota, what with the runaway cars accelerating out of control, Toyota is experiencing more problems with the Prius’ regenerative braking system. The problem, which drivers describe as “an inconsistent feel during slow and steady application of brakes on rough or slick roads when the antilock brakes engage,” or the brakes failing completely, only momentarily.

Mike Omotoso, senior manager of global powertrain for J.D. Power & Associates, said the culprit is a software glitch in the computer that controls the brakes. The problem “occurs as the Prius switches between using its electric motor and internal combustion engine to power the car. Whichever motor is powering the car also runs the brakes, he said, but the brakes give out momentarily in the transition. It’s almost like a circuit interruption, because when you switch, there’s a short pause like a second or less,” he said. “The system should be reprogrammed where the braking power is applied for a split second longer on the motor that was powering the car.”

Some 270,000 Priuses were sold in the US and Japan since last year, and so far Toyota has received about 180 complaints from drivers, including reports of four accidents caused by the brakes. Not nearly as bad as the sticky accelerator pedal, but another problem during this already difficult period is like twisting the knife.

This is a huge deal for Toyota, and they are currently looking into whether or not the other Toyota hybrid models are also affected. The company said that between recalls and lost sales, the sticky accelerator and faulty brakes problems will cost them over $2 billion. Ouch.

How is this affecting consumer confidence in Toyota? Well, I just know I sure as hell wouldn’t buy a Toyota right now. They’ve spent so much time and money building Toyota into a dependable, trustworthy name in the US, and now this? Audi had a similar, although less mainstream problem back in the ’80s, which took them years to recover from. There’s no doubt Toyota will lose a lot of money over the next few months, possibly longer.

OK, if you’re a gearhead, and haven’t bee living in a snow cave at the polar cap for the last while, you know that Toyota, the world’s largest auto manufacturer, is recalling cars by the millions. Main man Chris covered the story here at AutoMoBlog when it first started. Then it turned into a problem of huge proportions, not to mention a PR nightmare for Toyota.

So, where do we stand, at this moment in time?

To put it in layman’s terms, and to be brief about it, various Toyotas have been experiencing unintended acceleration problems. No, this is no joke. No, this is not due to drivers mashing the wrong pedal by mistake.

There has been some debate over the cause, but it’s boiled down to two things: Either a problem with the accelerator pedal, or the floor mats getting unstuck and jamming the throttle pedal open.

Toyota had this to say about the whole affair:

Toyota’s Statement On Associated Press Story
Our highest priority is to fix the accelerator pedal problems for our existing customers, and our pedal supplier is starting to ship newly designed pedals to dealers to meet the most immediate needs. One of the main reasons we are stopping production next week is to make more of the new pedals available to dealers right away. But at the same time, we are continuing to test effective pedal modifications for existing vehicles on the road that will be available to our customers quickly. We expect to announce a comprehensive remedy program for all affected customers and new vehicles soon.

Yeah, short and to the point, but you also have to hand it to Toyota for not trying to pass the buck and blaming it directly on third part floor mat suppliers. You will also note, in addition to the mass recall, the phrase “stopping production next week”. Ouch. That’s expensive.

The recall, which started here in North America has now spread to Europe and China, and is estimated to involve at least nine million cars and trucks. Yes, nine million.

Yes, this is a big deal:

“I am deeply sorry … Truly we think of our customers as a priority and we guarantee their safety,” said CEO Akio Toyoda. And referring to the near collapse of the company’s once strong reputation for safety and quality, Toyoda said, “I would like for the people to trust us.” according to ABC News.

That’s how big a deal it is.

When your company president and CEO shows up on international TV and says “Please trust us,” it’s a big deal.

And yeah, it’s also big because of not only the number of models effect, but of the models themselves:

Certain 2009-2010 RAV4,
Certain 2009-2010 Corolla,
2009-2010 Matrix,
2005-2010 Avalon,
Certain 2007-2010 Camry,
Certain 2010 Highlander,
2007-2010 Tundra,
2008-2010 Sequoia

Corolla, Avalon, Camry, Highlander, Tundra, Sequoia. Look those up on sales charts and see which ones are out of the top five. That’s right, none of them.

Toyota has a rather nice and helpful FAQ on their PR site to Answer your questions about the sticking accelerator pedal recall, and I’d highly recommend you go check that out, right now.

Of course, not all is going as well as Toyota would have liked, even at this stage. The aforementioned supplier, CTS is hopping mad.

“They acknowledged that they did not cause any accidents or injuries related to that condition of the pedal,” said Mitch Walorski, director of investor relations for CTS. He further said Toyota had acknowledged that this “rare set of conditions” had not caused any accidents, reported ABC.

So, if you have one of the Toyotas involved, call your dealer.

There’s a lot to be excited about in the new Mercedes E500. The same excellent quality that we have come to expect from Mercedes has been coupled with a well-designed and good looking interior delivering a faultless finish.

As far as looks go there’s been some debate. Mercedes have certainly gone back to the straight edge and chiseled good looks that we haven’t seen in a few years. Some have welcomed this return to a more traditional form and others have not. Whether you like the looks or not, in terms of performance the E500 out muscles its competition and starting from £48,000 it’s good value.

Performance is good as well. Handling isn’t amazing but then again that wasn’t the aim. There’s a V8 under the bonnet that churns out nearly 400bhp and glides through the gears. A very quiet ride but when you press on the accelerator the engine definitely roars to life, although you probably won’t be winning many drag races.

The car is really designed for driving comfort and practicality – at which it excels. The boxy shape allows for a huge boot and loads of room for passenger and back seat guests. The durability is another big plus and you won’t be noticing many potholes on the many long journeys you’ll be taking in this cruiser. There’s so much interior space you need an intercom to contact the back seat.

The Mercedes E500 will deliver on all your motoring needs. It can excite on motorways and backroads whilst delivering ultimate safety on family trips or school runs. The new Mercedes is definitely not your regular sports car.
